23 June: Singin’ in the Rain

We asked you to vote for the musical you want to watch the most – and here’s the winner. Singin’ in the Rain is one of the best loved musicals of all time. Lots of laughs and a ton of outstanding song and dance numbers including Make ‘em Laugh, Good Morning, and the genius title song.

Set in 1920s during the transition from silents to talkies, Singin’ in the Rain explores Hollywood’s favourite subject: itself. Screen stars Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and Lena Lamont (Jean Hagen) discover that their talents most definitely do not transfer to the new medium of sound – until friends Cosmo (Donald O’Connor) and Kathy (Debbie Reynolds) save the day.

“If you’ve never seen it and don’t, you’re bonkers.” TIME OUT

“Probably the most joyous and ecstatic thing ever committed to film.” ROYCE NG

“If I were the Minister of Health, I’d see that chemists were well stocked with cassettes of Singin’ in the Rain and encourage doctors to prescribe it for depressed patients.” PHILIP FRENCH

The musical numbers are wonderful, especially O’Connor’s brilliantly acrobatic Make ’em Laugh, Kelly’s Broadway Ballet with Cyd Charisse, and of course, the title song, the most famous and sublime of them all.” BBC

To celebrate the end of our winter/spring season , we invited you to help choose the film we should watch. We put together a shortlist of ten musicals – all English language, all magnificent.
