International “mockbusters”

Incredible facts from the wild wild world of popular world cinema:

  • The first ever Star Trek film was made not in Hollywood, but Turkey.
  • India brightened up a Harry Potter remake with 3D Bollywood musical dance sequences.
  • Nigerian film-makers remade Titanic as a musical – with sharks.

American cult film fan Ed Glaser has made thirteen award-winning shorts celebrating the strange world of the “mockbuster” or “remakesploitation” genre. While it would be easy to laugh at these cheap and cheeky movies, Glaser uses them as a springboard to talk about global culture, film-making, economics and globalisation.
