2 March: Purple Rain

Here’s what the audience said about our PURPLE RAIN singalong at the Deptford Lounge…

Fresh from our hugely popular Beatles singalong, Hard Day’s Night, here comes a singalong screening of the classic 1984 Prince movie at the recently-opened Deptford Lounge – the big gold building on the high street.

Featuring the hit songs When Doves Cry, Let’s Go Crazy, I Would Die 4 U, The Beautiful Ones, Darling Nikki and Take Me with U, Purple Rain stars Prince as a wannabe pop star in a grown-up movie about family conflict, backstage treachery, fabulous costumes and passionately big hair.

We’ll be playing the songs loud, and with a vocal warm-up from our vivacious choirmistress, you’ll be singing along with everyone else before you know it. Come as you are, or make a dressed-up night of it with ruffles, heels, purple leather and super-shiny jheri curls.

“The considerable appeal of the film depends upon his presence, and luckily the man sweats charisma” TIME OUT

“Just try to take your eyes off the 25-year-old Prince as he flaunts his unmatchable musical talent and raw sex appeal, blasting his way through the best soundtrack of the ‘80s. Fast forward through the talking bits, and you’ve got one of the best concert DVDs ever filmed.” CONTACT MUSIC

“With his mass of carefully tended, black curly locks and his large, dark doe eyes, he looks, in repose, like a poster of Liza Minnelli on which someone has lightly smudged a mustache. When astride his large motorcycle, as he is from time to time, the image suggests Kermit the Frog on a Harley- Davidson.” NEW YORK TIMES
