This year something like 40 local people decided to organise twenty different free film screening events in New Cross and Deptford over ten days in April/May. And together we called it “New Cross + Deptford Free Film Festival 2012“.
Over a thousand people came to events including The Science of Sleep on the ceiling of Lewisham Arthouse, a bicycle-powered Up in Telegraph Hill Park, a celebration of communal living at Sanford Housing Cooperative and Pasolini’s Gospel According to Matthew in St Nicholas Church. It was wonderful, despite the rubbish weather.
Monday 29 October 2012 was the first planning meeting for a festival which we’re imaginatively calling “New Cross + Deptford Free Film Festival 2013”. This is what we talked about:
If you’ve got an idea for a film screening, we want to help you to organise it. It’s fairly easy – all you need to do is contact the NXDFFF team and we’ll help you sort out:
- the legal and technical stuff
- finding a cool venue
- projection and sound equipment
- promoting and running the event.
Or if you’re hot at fundraising, marketing, admin, poster distribution or finance, come join the core organising group.
- Next meeting: 8pm Monday 26 November 2012, upstairs at the Amersham Arms. Facebook event listing
- Festival: Friday 26 April (to coincide with Deptford Last Fridays) – Sunday 5 May (the night before May Bank Holiday) 2013
Last year it cost just over £2000 to put on twenty events, and our budget was stupidly tight. Everyone worked for free, and some of us ended up paying for things out of our own pockets. Deptford Film Club donated £1000 of our Deptford Challenge Trust funding, and we managed to raise the rest through online crowd-sourcing and bucket collections at the events.
This year it would be nice to have the finances to run a bigger, sexier and more inclusive festival. Can you help us source funding or sponsorship for the festival? Maybe you know some organisations who’d benefit from partnering with the festival as a sponsor or in-kind supporter. Or you know of a funder who’d be impressed that last year 40 local people created a collaborative network of events that brought over 1000 people together in Deptford and New Cross.
If you do, let us know. Meanwhile, if you believe this festival is a good thing, PLEASE join us at the New Cross Local Assembly meeting from 6.45pm Tuesday 13 November at the Deptford Lounge, and vote to allow Lewisham Council to part fund the festival
We’d love to do a film against the wall on Deptford Beach. And a Busby Berkeley dance medley at Wavelengths. But we’re also thinking about easier venues like Lewisham Arthouse, The Albany, Cafe Crema, Number 82, Enclave, the Old Police Station, Goldsmiths, Laban Centre, Deptford Project, Deli X, New Cross House, the Big Red Pizza, the Wibbly Wobbly and Amersham Arms.
Got any ideas for more venues – or film events that would really sing in these venues? Tell us about it – and then think about organising it!
