As part of the Free Film Festivals movement in south London, we were interested in the idea of a self-creating film festival. Here, individuals and organisations run their own events with the support, equipment hire and funding assistance from the festival team.
Over ten days in 2012, a thousand people attended 20 events held in galleries, pubs, parks and other non-traditional ‘pop-up’ venues. Highlights included a screening of The Science of Sleep on the ceiling of Lewisham Arthouse, a cycle-powered screening of Pixar’s Up in Fordham Park, and a night-time screening of Pasolini’s Gospel According to Matthew in St Nicholas’ Church.
In 2013 the festival grew to 27 events attended by 1500 people – and in 2014 to 2200 people at 40 film screenings. This year we’re focussing on getting the widest possible range of people to come to the festival, and have programmed special events for older audiences, families, young people and the area’s rich migrant community.
New Cross + Deptford Free Film Festival is possible thanks to the unpaid work of dozens of volunteers and income from crowd-sourcing, bucket-shaking and fundraising. We look forward to seeing you at the next festival!
